Why Do We Need Trees?

Lesson Goals:

By the end of this lesson, students will:
  1. Improve listening skills for gist and taking notes.
  2. Identify stress at the word and sentence levels.
  3. Practice speaking, discussing topics, making suggestions and talking about experiences.
  4. Participate in listening activities outside the classroom.
  5. Participate in speaking activities outside the classroom.

Expected student behaviors:
By the end of this lesson, students will:
  • Read Blabberize’s rubric to identify the level they want.
  • Use Blabberize tool to create Blabbers talking about types of trees.
  • Listen to the Blabbers and take notes about them.
  • Answer the per-listening questions about trees.
  • Listen to the listening text for gist and check the answers of per-questions.
  • Use the Two Column Graphic Organizer to take notes about important facts concerning trees.
  • Identify the stressed syllables with the help of the teacher’s model, and dictionaries.
  • Discuss in groups the benefits and uses of trees in everyday lives.
  • Prepare a 2-minute presentation about trees putting in mind the criteria of the Oral Presentation Rubric.
  • Present their group presentations in front of the class.
  • Evaluate each other using the peer evaluation sheet.
  • Read the podcast’s rubric to determine the level they want.
  • Record a 2 minute podcast talking about an innovative way to use trees using the Audacity program.
  • Edit and export the podcast as a MP3 file for publishing.
  • Upload the podcast to the class wiki.
  • Listen to 2 podcasts at least and send your feedback.
  • Listen to the podcast again and transcribe it.
  • Read your transcription and other colleagues’ comments and correct it.
  • Record the podcast again and send it to the class wiki as a final draft.
  • Participate in the Voxopop TalkGroup created for this lesson.
  • Record 3 voice messages at least in the TalkGroup talking about your experiences during this lesson.

Pre-Task of Period (1):
Goal:
You are going to create a Blabber using a tool called Blabberize about any type of trees you know. Just tell us something about it.
Here are the instructions:
  1. Go to this page and watch the video of how to create a Blabber.
  2. Select or take a photo of the tree that you are going to talk about.
  3. Draw a mouth on that photo.
  4. Record or upload a minute-sound clip about this tree.
  5. Save the Blabber with a title involving your name.
  6. Embed your Blabber into the class wiki.

Post-Task of Period (1):
Goal:
You are going to talk about your experiences about the first period of the Trees lesson.
Here are the instructions:
  1. Go to this page and create an account on Voxopop.
  2. Once you have an account, Please go to this pageand click introduce yourself.
  3. Press the red button and start talking about yourself.
  4. Click the discussion thread titled "Trees Lesson: Day 1".
  5. Press the red button and start talking about your experiences during the first period of the Trees Lesson.

  6. Listen to your podcast again and transcribe it on a paper.
  7. Read your transcription and other colleagues’ comments and correct it.
  8. Record the podcast again and send it to the class wiki as a final draft.
